About the Project
Facility Operations
Bailly Generating Station
Began operation in 1962
Ceased operation in 2018
Site operations reviewed by U.S. EPA consist of:
Area A:
Northern portion: rail lines, the former coal pile, most of the generating station infrastructure, the Pure Air facilities, and the majority of the site’s Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) and Area of Concerns (AOCs)
Southern portion: the coal pile runoff infiltration basin, debris storage areas, and rail lines
Area B: Settling ponds
Area C: Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant, SWMU 14, SWMU 15 and the Indiana Dunes National Park north of BGS
Early Site Environmental Background/Timeline
Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) 15 and surrounding area circa 1977
2005: An Administrative Order on Consent was signed with US EPA, requiring environmental investigation, and if necessary, environmental remediation as required to protect human health and the environment.
2018: Ceased operations for electric generation. A synchronous condenser unit remains to maintain adequate flow and transmission of electricity in the region.
Investigation and remedial activities have been completed in the operation areas (Area A) and the pond areas (Area B) of the facility. Next steps involve remedial activity in Area C.
