Project Overview

Safeguarding environmental and human health is essential. This site provides background and the current status of a cleanup project taking place at the Bailly Generating Station.

Bailly Generating Station is located in northwestern Indiana at 246 Bailly Station Road in Chesterton. The site is approximately 350 acres in an industrial area along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. The coal-fired plant operated between 1962 and 2018 to supply electricity to northern Indiana. The station no longer generates electricity, and it is owned by Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO).

In 2005, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), identified areas at the facility that required investigation for possible contamination under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). RCRA addresses the proper management of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste.

This website has been designed to facilitate community access to documents generated during the RCRA Corrective Action Program.
